The three protective constituents of a helmet
1. Outer Shell
The outer shell is the hardest part of a helmet. It’s the layer that takes the force of the impact and is made from different materials. These materials significantly determine the shape, weight and price of the helmet.- Polycarbonate: are a group of thermoplastic polymers that are strong, tough and easily mouldable.
- Fibreglass: is among the most popular material used as it is hard and long-lasting.
- Kevlar: is a heat-resistant and robust synthetic fibre that can withstand high impact.
- Carbon Fibre: is an extremely strong and light-weight fibre-reinforced plastic.
How does it help?
- Prevents any sharp object from penetrating the helmet and takes the force of the impact, in the event of a crash.
- Provides structure to the inner liner so that it does not collapse upon a rough contact with the road concrete, in case of an accident.
2. EPS Liner
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is the soft and thick protective padding that forms the second layer of the two-wheeler helmet. It is designed to absorb the shock – both minor and major, of the impact. How does it help?
- Cushions the head and absorbs the impact from the crash.
- Spreads the force of the impact so that it gets evenly distributed.
- Reduces deceleration
3. Comfort Liner
While the outer shell and EPS Liner protect the head, the comfort liner ensures the helmet fits comfortably. Made of anti-bacterial material and absorbs the sweat, keeping the rider comfortable.
How does it help?
- Ensures the helmet fits the rider well
- It is removable and washable, therefore takes care of hygiene.
- Builds on riders’ comfort.
So, here were the three critical parts of a helmet that contribute significantly to a rider’s safety. Do research on these when deciding on a helmet.
